Introduction

In this article, we will discuss my decision to purchase a Laguna table saw over a SawStop, debunking the myth that only serious woodworkers must own a SawStop. I will provide detailed insights into why I chose Laguna and explain the factors that influenced my decision.

Background

I recently moved my woodworking shop from Texas to Ohio, and during this transition, I wanted to upgrade my table saw. Initially, I had a Delta 36-725 contractor saw, which I loved due to its affordability and practicality. However, as my skills improved and I aimed to tackle bigger tasks, I realized I needed a cabinet-style table saw.

The Debate - SawStop vs. Laguna

SawStop is a well-known brand among woodworkers, and it seems that owning a SawStop is considered a rite of passage in the woodworking community. The brand’s innovative safety feature, which stops and retracts the blade if it detects contact with human skin, is highly regarded. However, SawStop saws are quite expensive.

Price Comparison

One of the major factors that influenced my decision to choose Laguna over SawStop was the price. As you move up from contractor-style saws to cabinet-style saws, the cost increases significantly. SawStop saws start at $1,699 for their base model, while Laguna offers the Fusion F1 base model starting at $999, making it a more affordable option. In my case, the Laguna Fusion F2 model retailed at $1,399, whereas the equivalent SawStop saw would cost around $3,700.

Value for Money

Considering the significant price difference between SawStop and Laguna, I questioned whether the SawStop saw truly offered twice the value of the Laguna saw. While SawStop undoubtedly manufactures exceptional equipment, there is plenty of evidence of woodworkers successfully using non-SawStop branded saws without any safety issues. The probability of accidents is a difficult factor to quantify, and it is not a black and white issue. Ultimately, I felt that the exorbitant price tag of SawStop saws did not justify the additional cost.

Features and Quality

Laguna’s new line of table saws, known as the Fusion series, caught my attention. While the band saws manufactured by Laguna are highly regarded in the woodworking community, there was a lack of information available about their table saws. Despite the limitations of information, the features and price point attracted me towards Laguna.

The Fusion F2 model, which I purchased, offers several compelling features. Firstly, it is wired standard for 110 volts, which is ideal for use in a garage setting. Additionally, the cabinet-mounted cast trunnions ensure smooth operation and accuracy. The nickel and quarter tests confirmed the stability of the blade during operation. Moreover, the Fusion F2’s single-piece cabinet design is said to have excellent dust collection capabilities. The saw also includes over-the-blade dust collection, although I have not yet tested this feature.

Another notable feature is the European high-low design of the fence, allowing for cutting thin materials like veneers. The aluminum extrusion fence configuration can be adjusted to accommodate various cutting needs. Additionally, the extrusion can be used as a stop when using a miter gauge, eliminating the need for additional clamping or makeshift solutions.

Lastly, the mobility of the saw is worth mentioning. The Fusion F2 comes with integrated wheels on the base, making it easy to move around the workshop without requiring a separate mobile base. Considering the saw’s weight of approximately 350 pounds, these wheels are a practical addition.

Conclusion

In conclusion, I decided to purchase a Laguna table saw over a SawStop due to the substantial price difference and the belief that I could find a comparable or even better option. While SawStop undeniably produces high-quality equipment, I felt that the additional cost did not outweigh the benefits for my woodworking needs. The Laguna Fusion F2 offers excellent value for money, with its features, quality, and lower price point. Ultimately, it’s essential to evaluate personal preferences, budget, and specific woodworking requirements before making a decision on whether to choose a SawStop or another reputable brand like Laguna.
