Introduction

Do you love finding hidden treasures and turning them into beautiful pieces of furniture? Whether you’re looking to start a side hustle or furnish your home on a budget, this article is for you. Join me as I tackle a water-damaged buffet and show you the steps to repair it and give it a whole new lease on life.

Assessing the Damage

When I first acquired this buffet, it had been left out in the rain for days, resulting in severe water damage. Before beginning any repairs, it’s crucial to evaluate the extent of the damage. Here are the key points to consider during the assessment:

  1. Check if the veneer glue has been compromised.
  2. Inspect if the water damage has seeped into the particle board and caused swelling.

Sanding and Surface Preparation

Once I determined that the veneer was still intact and there was no swelling, I proceeded with sanding down the damaged section of the veneer. The aim here is to remove the failing finish and smooth out any raised texture caused by moisture. Don’t be afraid to remove veneer that is no longer holding on securely.

Bonding and Filling

After sanding, I used a bonded fill to patch up the areas where I had to peel up the veneer. It’s essential to ensure a smooth and even coverage. However, I did make a little mess during this step, so be prepared for some trial and error. Allow the bonded fill to dry thoroughly before proceeding.

Surface Preparation and Hardware Replacement

With the bonded fill dried, I then gave the rest of the buffet a thorough scuff sanding to remove the old finish. I also decided to replace the outdated hardware with new modern pieces that would add interest to the piece.

Cleaning and Preparing for Paint

Before applying the paint, it’s crucial to clean and prepare the surface properly. I used a TSP alternative to degrease and wipe down the entire buffet. Afterward, I wiped away the TSP with warm water, ensuring that no wood fibers were raised in the process. This step helps create a clean and smooth surface for the paint to adhere to.

Painting and Finishing

Now comes the fun part – painting! I chose a bold summery color called Press Fern by Fusion Mineral Paint. Using my HVLP gravity-fed spray gun, I applied thin coats of paint, allowing each layer to dry before moving on to the next. To achieve a smooth finish, I used a 220 grit sanding pad between each coat to remove any texture. Dusting or debris can sometimes find its way onto the wet paint, so it’s best to wait for it to dry completely before sanding it away and adding another coat.

To protect the paint and give the buffet a durable finish, I applied a polyurethane top coat with a satin finish. This not only adds an extra layer of protection but also enhances the overall aesthetic.

Adding the Final Touches

To complete the transformation, I decided to change the color of the hinges. I wrapped up each side of the buffet and spray painted them with a champagne gold color. It’s important to let the paint cure overnight before handling or taping over it.

The Final Result

After all the repairs, painting, and finishing touches, the water-damaged buffet is now a stunning piece. It has gone from being a hot mess to an eye-catching furniture item that is ready to find a new home. I acquired the buffet for $75, spent $10 on new hardware, and $25 on paint, bringing the total cost to $110. I am confident that I can sell it for $375, making a significant profit and giving this piece a new life.

Conclusion

Repairing water-damaged furniture might seem like a daunting task, but with the right techniques and a little creativity, you can transform any piece into something beautiful. Remember to assess the damage, prepare the surface properly, choose a suitable paint, and apply multiple thin coats for a flawless finish. Don’t forget to add your personal touch with new hardware or color choices.
